A fog machine, which can also be referred to as a smoke machine, is a device that expels vapor to create what looks like fog or smoke. Fog machines are highly versatile and can be used for a number of different purposes, most often in the entertainment realm.  The appearance of fog helps set a certain mood or feeling in a play or production, and it is often utilized in displays, most often during Halloween.  Fog machines are also highly effective in enhancing the effects of lighting and lasers due to the reflective and refractive properties of the smoke. Because of this, fog machines are often used in nightclub or party-like settings where the lighting displays are a prominent feature. The smoke emitted from the machine will cause the light beams to stand out and become brighter, and it will also help the light appear nearly solid. Fog machines work by vaporizing a solution made up of water and glycol-based or glycerine-based fluids through the atomization of mineral oil inside the fog machine. Once this has happened, the vapor is emitted from the fog machine and immediately condenses due to the moisture in the air, which results in a thick, fog-like smoke. The fluid used in this process is often referred to as fog juice or fog fluid, and it is highly recommended that the fog juice used should also come from the manufacturer of your fog machine. Fog machines are adjusted to the temperatures of the fluid made for each particular model, and it is possible that your machine could be damaged from overheating if the incorrect type of fog juice is used during the vaporization process.
Other smoke effects can be created with a fog machine. There is an accessory called a fog chiller that can be used to make the smoke creep along the ground once it is emitted from the machine and dissipate as it rises into the air. All you need to do is put it on top of the fog machine and it will quickly cool the smoke as it comes out, causing it to lay close to the ground. Fog can also be controlled to appear in various areas by using large flexible tubing and small fans that can be connected to your machine.
