Fiber optic lighting is a source of illumination that uses optical fiber to transmit light for both decorative and practical purposes. Fiber optics can be used for a neon look or spot lighting that can change colors on cue, and it will help you achieve a bold dramatic effect wherever desired.

Fiber optic technology uses optical fiber as a “light pipe” to transmit light in two different ways. The first is called sidelight, which is a band of light that is made up of several light strands held together in a transparent P.V.C jacket. Sidelight is used to emit light along the length of the fiber, appearing as a bright, fluorescent tube. This is often used to frame objects. A Fiber Optic Chandelier is another way in which sidelight is used. These chandeliers exude class and beauty through their glowing strands and shimmering crystal tips. They are easy to assemble and are powered by a single, long-life lamp, which makes maintenance easy and hassle-free. The chandelier display can come with a control system that will allow you to manage color changes in order to create beautiful animation effects.
The second function is endlight. Endlight is also composed of several individual strands of light fibers, yet they are usually confined in a solid, opaque covering instead. As the name implies, endlight emits light at the end of the strand, which creates a small spotlight effect. Endlight is used in a Fiber Optic Curtain, which is a spectacular way to provide a dramatic background or ceiling. The heavy curtain fabric is studded with endlight optical strands, the end points of which are exposed on the surface to create an incredible display of colors and patterns. Depending on the lighting fixtures and controller used, a fiber optic curtain has the potential to transmit a large variety of different designs and effects.
There are several advantages to using fiber optic technology. Fiber optics are incredibly safe because there is no electricity, heat, or ultraviolet light in the fiber optic cable. The cables are unbreakable, shockproof and waterproof, and the light source is remote and can be placed in a safe location. The cables deliver light exclusively to the point of illumination, which is especially safe when lighting an area that involves water, such as a fountain, pool, spa, or sauna. No heat is carried through the cables, which means that issues such as hot display cases and overheated fixtures will no longer be a problem. Fiber optics allows you to have bright, focused light without needing to worry about heat damage to sensitive materials such as food, flowers, or fine art. Likewise, these cables do not transfer harmful UV rays, which makes fiber optics a great choice to supply bright, gentle light to delicate items.
Utilizing fiber optic technology is an energy efficient way to illuminate large areas with pure white light or color changing effects, as it operates on less than two amps. Fiber optic lighting can have several different colors by using colored filters with white light sources. This color changeability is a unique feature to fiber optics.
Fiber optic systems are user friendly and require very little maintenance. Typically, trying to illuminate areas that are difficult to access like ceilings or small spaces can be challenging and frustrating because it is hard to re-lamp and change the light source. However, with fiber optics, the light source can be placed in an area that is easy to reach while the cables can be in any remote places that you choose to put them. Multiple cables can be installed to one light source, making it a much easier, simpler, more economical process.
Fiber optic lighting can be used virtually anywhere, however some of the more common uses can be found in arcades, nightclubs, theatres, signage, window displays, art pieces, landscaping and architectural design, chandeliers, restaurants, swimming pools, spas, and fountains. The possibilities are limitless, and fiber optics is a great choice if you are looking for a safe, efficient way to provide bold lighting and effects.
