A black light is a type of illumination that emits ultraviolet radiation (UV) and has very little visible light. You may also have heard of a black light being referred to as a UV (ultraviolet) light or a Wood’s lamp. This type of light has very little visibility because most of the observable light is blocked by a dark blue optical filtering material in the glass of the bulb. Thus, a black light bulb will emit mostly ultraviolet light, which is invisible to the human eye. However, when certain materials are illuminated by this UV light, a small fraction of visible light will be emitted onto these substances, giving them a bright, fluorescent glow.

Black lights are incredibly easy to install and put to use, and they require very little power. There are countless ways in which these lights can be utilized for purposes that span far and wide. Black lights have an incredible ability to quickly transform an area with spectacular results, and they are often used for decorative and artistic lighting effects because of this. Whenever something is glowing in the dark, it is a black light that is creating that effect. A black light has the ability to take something ordinary and transform it into something extraordinary. Let it shine on a fluorescent substance in a dark room and it will bring out the colors of that substance like you wouldn’t believe. Likewise, take something white, such as your teeth or a t-shirt, switch a black light on it in the dark and watch it glow. Many of us have probably experienced the excitement and enjoyment that glow-in-the-dark lighting generates even as we were growing up. What would a game of laser tag be without all those glowing lights? The marvel and fun that results from the effects of a black light does not dissipate with age; it is something we can all continue to enjoy and appreciate. However they also have many practical uses aside from just making people and fluorescent objects look really cool. Clubs and amusement parks often use black light paint for things such as hand stamps that will glow when put under a black light. Other uses include diagnostic and therapeutic practices in medicine, detection of substances tagged with fluorescent dyes, identification of counterfeit money, investigation of crime scenes, quality control in manufacturing, rock hunting, attraction of insects, and many more. Whether for work, hobby, or entertainment, you can probably find a use for black lights. They have the amazing ability to make the invisible visible and the power to make one specific object stand out from everything around it. Imagine the countless possibilities in which you could put this to use!
